We've all seen Supernanny. I love her. She has taught me some really useful advise. One thing that I have had to amend is her "naughty spot". (Said with an British accent of course.) The 'minute per year of age' thing does not work on Brendan. We would have to take him back to that spot 100 times. So, we decided that he would have to sit there until he is "Ready to be nice". This has worked really well for us. Sometimes he is ready in about 2 minutes, while other times he is there for 30 minutes or more. For example, the other night we were asking him whether he wanted to take a bath or a shower. He didn't want either. So, we gave him the option of doing one or the other, or going to time out. He was undressed at this time, so he sat naked in his time out chair. We go check on him every few minutes or so to see if "He's ready to be nice" and talk to him about why he is there. We usually ask him WHY he is doing/not doing what he is/should be doing. He told us that he would take a shower, but that he didn't want to wash his hair. Or his body. Then he said that he didn't want to wash his hair because "Daddy ALWAYS dunks my head!" in the tub. We negotiated that I would help him wash his hair. (for some reason he thought he needed help that night... whatever.) It took him about a total of 20 minutes to decide that he was ready to be nice and he took his shower. By himself. After he makes his choice we ALWAYS praise him for his decision to be nice and follow instructions. Positive reinforcement!!
Time out really works for me! Go over to Shannon's place for more awesome tips!
That is the "rule" at our house as well. And, they definitely do not get out of time out if they are still fussing.
ReplyDeleteThanks for commenting on my blog. Good tip. We struggle with my daughter crying in time out. I don't let her come out until she calms down, so I am going to try this tip on her. THanks.
ReplyDeleteI love time out & supernanny! But my favorite part of this post is that he sat on the chair naked.....why do they have to be so stubborn?? Love it!
ReplyDeleteI wish time outs still worked at our house. I would have to sit on my 6 year old to get him to stay in place now:) Your little guy sure sounds like a sweet kid though-- but kids sure take a lot of patience, don't they?
