Every year in the spring a million ducks gather along the banks of the canal that runs behind my moms house. There are two that like to call my parents pool their own personal pond. We call them Donald and Daisey. Now, I'm sure that there have been several Donald's and Daisey's through the years, the kids just like to think that they keep coming back year after year. These last 3 or 4 years Magpies have been taking over the canal, eating any little hatchling that comes within it's sights. Dad has made sure the pellet gun is readily loaded and ready for when he sees any Magpies that come within shooting distance. I like to think of him as the duck's personal Secret Service agent. Occasionally a mother duck that has flown around trying to find a nest, doesn't quite make it to the canal before she lays her eggs. Once they hatch, they have to find their way through the human world and try to make it safely to the canal to be with all the other little ducks. A lot of times these poor families get lost, and need assistance. On their way home from preschool, Jason and Brendan saw a family of ducks running next to a storm drain. Some of the little ducklings fell into the drain and so they lifted the crate, and got down inside to see if they could catch them and get them back with mom. He is so happy that these ducks made it! We couldn't get 2 of them, but 4 made it out safe and sound. By the time he found the 4 ducks, Grandma came by with a box to put them in, and a flashlight to help see under the road. Reba also wanted to see. It became a family affair, with Dad finding the closest gate opening to the canal. GO TEAMWORK!
